I think there are times when a degree is necessary for a chosen field. Anything from medical to education will require such credentials, and rightfully so. However, for many other career paths your education matters much less. Anything in the creative field, and anything remotely tied to entrepreneurship, require many more "skills" than it does "credentials." I think we are in the midst of a big shift of the way the public views education. Schrage's article does a great job of comparing knowledge to actual skills. The part where he talks about "Econ 101" proves to be so true in my mind. What you do outside of the classroom, and the connections you make there, are almost always more valuable then the bit of information you gained from any of your classes (much of which will be lost down the road anyways).

I see a lot of my friends in my generation (young 20's) not completely grasping this notion. I can't believe how many of them have told me they are working on putting together their "resume," the standard two page document that these days, doesn't separate you from anybody. I compare this to Schrage's idea that the resume is turning into "a multimedia platform that projects precisely the brand image and substance a job candidate seeks to convey," and "..Instead of listing aspirations and achievements, these resumes present portfolios around performance."

These days knowledge is nothing without skill, and skill cannot be proven unless you have a platform to do so. I think if you are looking to be hired by a company, taking more of this approach with ultimately give you a better chance at a position. Your image is everything. Marketing yourself as a brand has much more power then a 2-page document citing the degree you were handed at graduation.
